Sunken Boat Retrieval Procedure
Safety Procedure for Working in Boating Lake Waters
Before entering the pond, you must read and understand this safety procedure. If you have not read it, do not enter. Entering without prior reading is strictly at your own risk and may result in serious injury or death.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- 1
Never Enter Alone
- You must not enter the pond under any circumstances if you are alone.
- A minimum of two people is required: one to enter the pond, and one to act as a safety assistant.
- 2
Wear Approved Safety Gear
- The person entering the pond must wear the club's designated waders.
- Inspect waders for damage before use. Damaged waders can fill with water and become a drowning hazard.
- 3
Use a Safety Rope System
- Securely tie a safety rope around the person entering the pond.
- The assistant must maintain a firm grip on the rope at all times and feed it out gradually as needed.
- 4
Enter Only at the Designated Access Point
- Use the marked entry location to enter the pond.
- Avoid steep banks, slippery edges, or unapproved access points.
- 5
Maintain Constant Communication
- The assistant must stay alert and maintain verbal contact with the person in the water.
- If communication is lost or the person appears distressed, initiate retrieval immediately.
- 6
Retrieve Objects Safely
- Once the sunken boat or item is located, assess its position and weight carefully.
- Avoid overreaching or leaning forward, which can cause loss of balance.
- Use slow, controlled movements to lift or reposition the object.
- 7
Understand the Risk of Wader Flooding
- If you fall or lean too far, water can enter the waders.
- This can cause a rapid increase in weight, pulling you under and leading to potential drowning.
- Always keep your centre of gravity low and stable.
- 8
Exit with Assistance
- Exit the pond using the same designated entry point.
- The assistant must continue to manage the safety rope and provide support until the person is fully out of the water.
- 9
Consider Using Retrieval Tools
- To reduce the need for leaning or reaching, consider using a grabber, scoop, or retrieval pole.
- These tools can help maintain safe posture and minimize risk.
Final Reminder
Safety is non-negotiable.
Should your model boat sink in our pond and if you are sailing on your own and you have no access at this time to our sunken boat recovery safety equipment, then you must leave your boat in the pond until our next sailing day (Wednesday or Sunday).
Should you not be a SMBC club member then you should call Sefton's parks department for advice on 0345 140 0845.
Should you wish to take it upon yourself to enter the pond without a support person present and not using the club's safety equipment, then you do so completely at your own risk.
Every step in this procedure is designed to prevent injury or fatal accidents. If in doubt, do not proceed — seek help from a committee member or contact us.
